A wagering requirement specifies how much qualifying play is required before particular bonus funds or winnings can be withdrawn. The multiplier alone is incomplete: the amount it applies to matters just as much.
Win targets and wagering turnover
A turnover requirement counts qualifying stakes. A win target or credit target uses the amount defined in the offer, so it cannot automatically be entered as a wagering multiplier in the calculator. Check whether the terms refer to winnings, a credit balance or total stakes, and what becomes payable after the target is reached. A promotional payout cap can still apply.
A worked example: bonus only or deposit plus bonus
This is an illustrative calculation, not a current offer from a reviewed brand. Assume a $50 deposit, a $50 bonus and a 10-times requirement.
| Calculation base | Arithmetic | Qualifying stakes required |
|---|---|---|
| Bonus only | $50 × 10 | $500 |
| Deposit plus bonus | ($50 + $50) × 10 | $1,000 |
These totals describe turnover, not a fee, a required loss or a guaranteed return. Funds can be lost before the required turnover is reached. Meeting a turnover figure does not override other offer conditions.
For more on how wagering terms can be misunderstood, see the Behavioural Insights Team study.
What does 40x wagering mean?
Multiply the amount named in the offer by 40. These AU-dollar examples are illustrations, not current offers from the reviewed brands.
| Calculation base | Calculation | Required qualifying turnover |
|---|---|---|
| AU$10 bonus only | AU$10 × 40 | AU$400 |
| AU$10 deposit plus AU$10 bonus | (AU$10 + AU$10) × 40 | AU$800 |
| AU$100 bonus only | AU$100 × 40 | AU$4,000 |
Turnover is the total value of qualifying stakes. It is not the amount you are guaranteed to retain or withdraw. Losses can exhaust the balance before a requirement is met.
How game contribution changes the calculation
At 100% contribution, an AU$10 eligible stake adds AU$10 towards turnover. At 10% contribution, it adds AU$1. An AU$400 turnover requirement would therefore require AU$4,000 of eligible stakes if every stake counted at 10%. This explains the arithmetic; it is not a recommendation to place those stakes.
A game’s RTP and its contribution rate describe different things. Use the contribution rules attached to the specific offer, including any excluded games or maximum stake.
Read the conditions together
Before interpreting a bonus, identify:
- Calculation base: bonus funds, winnings, deposit plus bonus, or another defined amount.
- Eligible play: which games count and at what contribution rate. Use the offer’s contribution table, including any exclusions.
- Deadline: the expiry date, time zone and consequences of expiry.
- Stake and withdrawal restrictions: any maximum stake, excluded payment methods or cashout cap.
- Cancellation: what happens to bonus funds and real-money funds if the offer is cancelled.
If these details are missing, a headline amount cannot establish an offer’s practical value. Do not increase spending simply to finish a requirement.
Acceptance and completion deadlines
An offer may specify a deadline to claim it and a different deadline to complete its conditions. Read both, including the stated time zone. A claim deadline alone does not tell you how long qualifying play remains eligible.
For a hypothetical offer, assume acceptance closes at 18:00 AEST on 20 September and its conditions separately require completion by 18:00 AEST on 23 September. Accepting before the first deadline would not remove the second one. These dates are made up; they are not an offer from a reviewed brand.
Check the clause explaining what expires: the unused offer, bonus funds, related winnings or another specified balance. Do not assume expiry or cancellation treats deposited funds and bonus funds identically. Ask for the exact clause if it is unclear; the order in which funds are used depends on the offer.
Check the expiry shown alongside your own offer. For an example of where these details appear, see Ignition’s bonus-expiry help. Each casino sets its own deadlines.

If a withdrawal is restricted
Keep the offer wording, date accepted, transaction references and the operator’s explanation. Ask which precise clause applies to the balance in question. Our complaint guide provides a factual enquiry template. If continuing to play is causing pressure, see Australian gambling support.
Work through your offer
